Practitioners of white hat SEO do not employ methods which aim to trick the search engine crawlers in order to achieve short term and artificially high rankings. Instead they tailor their client’s web content to the users of that content, and then make the content easily accessible to the search engine’s crawlers.

The dark side: Black hat SEO companies

On the flip side, black hat SEO companies attempt to achieve the same end as white hat companies by employing tactics which aim to deceive the search engines spiders. Tactics include utilizing link farms, hidden text, and cloaking. While these SEO companies may achieve high rankings quickly, they often do not experience long term success as the leading search engines are getting better and better at recognizing these tactics and penalizing the sites which use them.
